What Church looks like in North Philadelphia days after a standoff

A standoff between a gunman and Philadelphia Police kept neighbors on lockdown for nearly 24-hours August 14, 2019. On assignment for the Philadelphia Inquirer, I visited Zion Baptist church, which stands just two blocks from the standoff site. Reverand Cauncey Harrison addressed the events of that week during the Sunday morning church service August 19, but many said it looked the same as any other Sunday service-- a community where members bring celebration grief and peace and worship together.

An overwhelming sense of praise and peace evoked emotions in church that day. Members were happy the community remained safe despite police presence in the neighborhood. Instead of fear, prayers of hope and gratefulness filled the sanctuary followed by hot dogs and snacks in fellowship.
